Joining our 135 Main Street offerings, we are proud to be be opening The Carbondale Clay Center 12th Street Annex. This space allows us flexibility to meet the increasing demand for more programming and outreach, classes, shelf rentals and studio time as we address wait lists and continue to fundraise toward a new building. The additional space makes creating with you here at CCC even easier, and allow us the flexibility to keep Carbondale dirty.

What is the CCC 12th Street Annex?
The 12th Street Annex is our newest studio addition to CCC. In addition to our Main Street Studio, it will be another fully working studio space for wheel and handbuilding. The main difference is that the Annex will run as a Cone 6 (medium-fire) program as opposed to our Main Street Studio which runs as a Cone 10 (high-fire) program. Our goal is to have the 12th Street Annex space operational by mid-October, 2026, if not sooner. Woohoo!
Why is Carbondale Clay Center opening an additional studio location?
It’s no secret that we are bursting at the seams and cannot meet the demand. That’s why we’re in a capital campaign to figure out a new permanent space that will help us solve this problem and update our facilities. This takes time, and we’re working hard to meet our campaign goals. While we figure this out, the addition of the 12th Street Annex helps CCC serve more of the community right now!
Additionally, once we begin our new permanent home in 2027, we will potentially have an interim period without access to our Main Street studio for a period of time. If that loss of space happens, the 12th Street Annex will be available so that community members can still create. To do this successfully, we plan to limit programming in the Annex at that time and open up the space to accommodate all of our current shelf and studio renters. Makers Members will also be able to use the Annex during this interim period.
As always, we will keep you all updated with Capitol Campaign momentum - our goal is to keep you working, no matter what happens.
What will be offered at the 12th Street Annex?
Much like our Main Street Studio, we will offer adult and youth classes & programming, shelf rentals, independent study opportunities, makers membership, and open studio access. Cone 6 glazes and firing will also happen at the 12th Street Annex. Note: Because the Annex will have limited hours from 9am-9pm every day, programming will be lighter and therefore studio closures will happen a bit less at the Annex than at Main Street during the day. Our Main Street Studio, however, will remain open for studio use 24/7 as per usual.

Where is the CCC 12th Street Annex located?
As is the case at our Main Street location, sometimes it will be easy to find parking nearby and at other times it will not. We will have 2 reserved parking spots directly in front of the entrance to the 12th Street Annex, and that is it. However, there is additional communal parking on the side of the building, and street parking is allowed as long as driveways are not blocked. As always, we encourage walking, biking, carpooling, or riding the Downtowner whenever possible.
Is there parking at the 12th Street Annex?
Starting in mid-October, open studio hours in the 12th Street Annex will be from 9am-9pm every day of the week. Office hours for both the Annex and our Main Street location will be M-F, 10am-5pm and Saturdays, 11am-4pm*. Clay can be purchased at our Main Street Studio or the 12th Street Annex during office hours. Note: Our Main Street Studio will continue to offer 24/7 studio access unless it is closed for programming as per usual.

What are the hours of operation at the 12th Street Annex?
Who Can Use the 12th St Annex?
Current Students, Shelf Renters, Studio Renters, and Makers Members can use the Annex within reason (see below). We do not offer drop in’s at either studio currently. If you are interested in creating, please consider a private lesson for you or your group, registering for a class, or becoming a monthly Shelf Renter or Maker Member.
As the 12th Street Annex will run as a Cone 6 Program and the Main Street Studio is a Cone 10 Program - we ask that all glazing and firing happen at the same studio. With that said…
We ask that all students and independent study participants registered for classes work only at the studio in which their class is held during the session - That specific studio is where their storage shelf is, where their glazing set up is, and where the specific kiln for that specific studio glaze is located. Bringing work that is made in one studio to another is not allowed for students in classes as this is a nightmare scenario for our studio techs.
We also ask registered Independent Study Session Students to only use the studio they are registered for.
However, monthly Shelf & Studio Renters and Makers Members can use both studios as long as they glaze and fire in the same studio. The Annex is STRICTLY a Cone 6 Program, glazes are not compatible with the Cone 10 program at our Main Street Studio, and our studio techs will ban you for life if you start messing with them.
Makers Members, as always, please contact us BEFORE dropping off pieces to be fired. It is impossible to track your work if we don’t know it’s yours.

We actually anticipate a lot of movement and are prepared for this. Priority will go to our current shelf/studio renters and then we will open it up to others who are interested. As mentioned, if you choose to keep your Main Street Studio shelf now and we need to close Main Street at some point in 2027 (based on Capitol Campaign decisions), you will be able to move to the Annex at that time if you so choose. Our goal is to keep you working.
What if I’m a current Shelf or Studio Renter at Main Street and want to move my shelf to the 12th Street Annex?
A shelf rental in either space is intended as a long term studio commitment (6+ months) for ceramicists with enough experience to use our community studio with little guidance. How do I become a shelf renter at the 12th Street Annex?
Students and Independent Study Registration will be the same as our Main Street Studio - via our website. We will simply add the studio location to the class description and confirmation emails so that people know if their class will be held at our Main Street Studio or the 12th Street Annex.
How do students know where their class will be?
No Capital Campaign funds are being used to operate this studio. The costs of operations will come from our programming efforts and scholarship funds.
How is the 12th Street Annex being funded?
This can explain that additional operating space allows the Board to thoughtfully evaluate building designs, locations, timelines, and financial feasibility without CCC’s current space limitations forcing a rushed long-term decision.
How does the Annex give CCC greater flexibility as the Capital Campaign moves forward?
