Q&A WITH THE ARTIST
Carbondale Clay Center (CCC): What is your favorite beverage recipe?
Candice Methe (CM): Spicy Tequila Spritz
1/2 oz. Jalapeno Simple Syrup (more if you like it sweet)
1 oz of tequila
squeeze 1 lime
squeeze 1 grapefruit
finish with sparkling water
Mezcal Float (1/2 oz)
CCC: What keeps you inspired in the studio?
CM: Finding time to play. I have wealth of ideas that I keep stored in journals, sketchbooks and scraps of paper in the studio. Ideas are what keep me inspired. So many ideas, so little time.
CCC: Where does your creative process begin (i.e. sketchbook, specific routine, image reference, etc.)? What considerations do you think about when creating drinking vessels?
CM: My creative process begins by making and following an intuitive path. I have a huge stack of visual references that I will leaf through and the parts that excite me stick in my subconscious and will come out without me really thinking about them.
When making drinking vessels I consider function. I want the pot to have a nice balance, be a good size and have a comfortable lip and handle. I also want them to be interesting visually and lean a little towards a sculptural object.
CCC: Do you have a certain type of vessel that you prefer to drink from? Does it vary based on the beverage?
CM: My preferred vessel for drinking is a straight forward cylinder with a comfortable handle. A little workhorse for my tea drinking needs. For cocktails I gravitate towards the same shape without the handle and I like it to be on the bigger side because I like a bigger cocktail.
