Magic and Mystery Kids’ Handbuilding Class

Clay Around the World Kids’ Handbuilding Class

Tuesday Afternoons

Kids will learn basic pottery techniques from different countries (like wabi sabi Japanese bowls and South African coil pots), while also learning about the ceramic culture of that country. These classes inspire young artists to discover the joy of working with clay with a global mindset.

Intro to Wheel Throwing

Are you a beginner in the world of wheel throwing? Join us in this introductory 7 week course designed to jumpstart your love affair with clay. Instruction will focus on centering, opening, and pulling clay pieces on the potter's wheel as well as adding handles and finishing techniques. As your skills build, we will encourage you to explore your creativity as well. We'll even include demonstrations on how to use glazes so you can add your own touch of personality to your pieces.

Surface Dreams

Thursday Mornings

This course explores the creative possibilities of surface design to enhance wheel-thrown or handbuilt pottery. Demonstrations and hands-on projects will cover methods such as slip application, carving, sgraffito, inlay/mishima, wax resist techniques, and glazing strategies. Participants will leave with a range of finished pieces and a deeper understanding of how surface design can elevate thrown work.

Love Ramen? Who doesn't! Get your hands dirty creating custom ceramic bowls perfect for noodles, soups, or everyday meals. You’ll explore wheel-throwing and handbuilding methods, refining form, trimming, and finishing to achieve balance, comfort, and style. Instruction will also cover glazing and surface decoration techniques (and a special surprise with another local artist). Whether you’re new to clay or building on previous experience, this class offers a fun, creative way to combine craftsmanship and culinary culture.

Narratives in Clay

Monday & Wednesday Evenings

Let Clay be your Canvas - Building on one's existing foundational ceramic wheel throwing and/or handbuilding techniques, this course lets participants explore the use of clay as a medium for storytelling and personal expression. Students will investigate how techniques and composition can communicate narrative ideas—whether literal, symbolic, or abstract. Using surfaces as a canvas for design and imagery, participants will develop a body of work that reflects their unique voice and conceptual intent. THIS CLASS MEETS TWICE A WEEK ON MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS.

Ceramic Jewelry Making - Teens and Adults Wednesday Evenings

From clay to wearable art! Learn basic clay techniques, glazing, and jewelry assembly. By the end of the course, each student will have created a small collection of ceramic jewelry pieces such as pendants, earrings, or beads for gifts or to add to your own personal style statment (the Carbondale Fashion Show is right after this class ends, just sayin’).

Get A Grip

Wednesday Mornings

Sometimes life gives us what we can handle, and sometimes it doesn't. We're here to help - at least by helping you handle your mugs. Whether you are new to clay or have experience, this class is for those who love mugs and no longer want the handle to be an afterthought. The first sessions will focus on wheel and handbuilding techniques to build up one's body of work. We will then move into the technical skills and considerations for building and attaching beautiful custom handles. Whether, it's for individual mugs, for sets, or for whatever else you dream up, we'll help you get a grip.

Independent Study - Winter Session

December 16th - March 13th

Independent Study is for intermediate/advanced artists who want self-paced studio time with little to no guidance. Students get 24-hour access to reserve time as space allows. To qualify, you must have taken at least one intermediate/advanced class at CCC or two beginner classes.

If you have equivalent experience elsewhere, email programs@carbondaleclay.org before registering.

Independent Study requires session-by-session registration, and shelves must be cleared at the end of the session unless you plan on registering for the following session.

ENROLLMENT POLICY

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A student will only be registered for a class upon receipt of tuition payment in full. We cannot guarantee placement into a class until payment is received. Firing fees are included in the tuition.

CANCELLATION POLICY

To cancel a registration and receive a refund, you must notify the CCC at least 7 days before the start date of your class. We will refund your payment minus a 10% cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 7 days before the start date of the class. In the event that the Clay Center is forced to cancel a class, a full refund will be issued.
