Feeling Walls

Sara Ransford
with guest botanist Joey Glickman

November 6th - December 18th, 2021

Inspired by the natural phenomena of the west, Ransford’s work explores the depths of erosion and heights of mountains through her paper clay wall tiles. Each piece is reminiscent of canyon walls etched by rivers over eons of time. Ransford believes that the impact of water is a supreme occurrence – it is our life source but can also be a force of nature causing life changing events. Her work reveals past events, new paths, changes of course, and long-lasting impacts of both nature and humans.

In this new body of work, Ransford has invited Glickman to nurture growth of desert flora within her canyon sculptures. This collaboration was ignited more than a year ago, when Glickman attended Ransford’s Anderson Ranch Workshop and presented a ceramic piece that he had planted the year prior. A portion of this exhibition, Feeling-Walls, will showcase these collaborative works, intertwining clay sculptures with the living world.

“For many years, Sara has been an important member of the Clay Center family. Having the opportunity to host an exhibit of her intricate and expressive tiles has been an exciting endeavor, that we are excited to bring to our community,” says Studio & Gallery Manager Matthew Eames. “I look forward to spending time with each of her pieces and the variety of details displayed in her works.”
