Clay National XII -The Art of Utility

Opening Reception : Friday, August 4th - 6pm to 8pm

Reception with Juror Linda Christianson: Sat. August 12th 6 to 8pm

Pottery made for daily or occasional use requires an acceptance of utility as a starting point. It is essential to a utilitarian ceramic object that it simultaneously does its duty well and yet can stand on its own as a visual object. In the end, there is a transformative perspective in which pots are viewed as engaging tools. Some pots that were made thousands of years ago now live in museums. Their presence captures the attention of generations of people. They survived the rigors of use, disuse, and time. Not only were they useful, but were the conveyors of cultural meaning. In a way, they acted as artful tools for living.

This exhibition is graciously sponsored by David Goin.
