Clay for Beginners

Molds and Making
"Molds and Making" will explore the vastness of molds. From plaster to bisque, custom made or found, used for reproduction or decoration, on the wheel or in hand-building. This class will cover all things molds, and how you can use them to enhance your knowledge and practice in clay!
All levels welcome.

Make ceramic wares to be fired in our Raku Kiln. Take the opportunity to learn and participate in this traditional Japanese firing process where you'll really turn up the heat. All levels welcome.

Join us for a skill-building workshop tailored to your ceramic interests and curiosities.

Bowls and Plates
Focusing on form, this class will explore the utilitarian aspects of creating bowls and plates.

Working the Surface
This hands surface design crash course on workshop will explore ceramic processes for wet, leatherhard, bone dry, bisque and glazing. Demonstrations will include easy pattern / design transfers using a xerox type copy and colored slip or underglaze, commercial tissue transfers, water etching and more.
Students should bring a leatherhard piece or tile, a bone dry piece or tile, a bisqued piece of tile, and a xerox type laser copy of a pattern or design they want to see on their work.

Mastering Our Glazes
This class will cover glaze planning, test tiles, and application techniques including: layering, wax resist, banding, & brush work. Bring your bisque!

Mixed Medium Molds
In this special topic class, we will cover how to develop form through press molds and the versatility of insulation foam as a mold material. Expect to see the process from start to finish — drawing stages, cutting foam, assembling and using molds.

In this class we will cover a variety of surface design techniques.

Pre-registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A student will only be registered for a class upon receipt of tuition payment in full.
Adult class tuition covers instruction during scheduled class meeting times, use of the studio, your firing fees and one bag of clay. Additional clay is available and costs $20 per 25 lb. bag.
To cancel a registration and receive a refund, you must notify the CCC at least 7 days before the start date of your class. We will refund your payment minus a $35 cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 7 days before the the start date of the class.
In the event that the Clay Center is forced to cancel a class, a full refund will be issued.
Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Work Exchange
Financial aid, scholarships, and work exchange are available to help students cover the costs of classes or workshops. Work exchange is scheduled outside of class time, and is given at the rate of $10 per hour.
The Clay Center welcomes contributions from the community to support scholarships and financial aid.
